Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The weight that many of my students carry on their shoulders is far beyond what any six-year-old should have to handle, but still, 25 bubbly faces bounce into my classroom each morning, ready and eager to learn. I am so grateful to know each of them and their families.
I teach at a school where 95% of students are socioeconomically disadvantaged and 67% are English Learners.
Only 35% of adults living within my school's zip code have graduated from high school. The students I work with battle tremendous challenges, but they are incredibly bright and resilient and they will make tremendous progress this year despite the challenges they face.
My Project
There is a lot of trauma in our community. We have a growing population of refugees and most of our students are living in poverty. In a school like mine, which serves a low-income, minority population, teaching wellness sends a message to students that they matter, in a world where a lot of forces are already making them feel like they don’t. Wellness tools like mindfulness and yoga empower students to love, take care of, and advocate for themselves. These tools help our students to cope with the trauma that accompanies growing up in poverty as a result of racism and systemic oppression. Yoga mats and blocks will allow me to make sure that my students are safe and comfortable while practicing mindful movement, and the salt lamp and singing bowl will create a calming atmosphere for them!
