Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students experience toxic stress on a daily basis. Growing up in neighborhoods that are increasingly chaotic and challenging, our students experience violence, and dangerous, unhealthy living conditions. The students at G.E.S come from very diverse backgrounds and most from families that qualify for free and reduced lunch. Our students are special because they come to school with many of society's stresses and anxiety, yet they are happy to be at our school. They want to be happy, safe and learn during there school day. They work together to support and help each other at school and home. As educators, we work every day to provide the student with a safe and positive environment. I want our students to "Reach for the Stars" and manage the stress to become productive members of society.
My Project
Mindfulness and Yoga for the Classroom! The items I am requesting will be used for mindful and yoga activities. I will be starting a new classroom set up with yoga mats, special seating with balance balls, wobble cushions, stuffed animal storage bean bag chairs, a swing hammock pod chair, floor lamps, a nigh light, a liquid motion bubble timer, and a cube storage unit to put their shoes before entering the mindfulness room. My dream for our students is to learn a deep level of self-esteem, concentration, compassion that will pave the path for daily performance and happiness in school and their lives!
Our students will have a "STILL" room to go to as part of their day at our Elementary School!
In the "STIll" room student's will experience a peaceful, engaging and fun learning environment. For the next school year, I am setting up a new classroom to create a mindful space that will support the curriculum that will have a positive impact on our students' nervousness when they enter the room. This classroom space will need materials to support wellness, sensory exploration, yoga and social-emotional growth, and mindfulness. As a veteran teacher of 25 plus years, NOW is the time for change in education... and this classroom will help greatly meet the needs for this change.
