Help me give my students GoZen, an engaging social emotional learning program to teach mindfulness and boost resilience and emotional intelligence.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are low income, high risk students in a Title I school. All of the students I work with have social, emotional, behavioral, and/or mental health needs. They all have special needs that require extra support in order for them to be healthy, safe, and successful throughout the school day.
My students need help maintaining their attention and impulses, as well as managing their emotions and coping with challenges in and out of school.
Most lack the basic self-esteem, communication, and social skills that are so vital to being able to function at school.
Social emotional learning programs can be dry and outdated. My students need a program that can make mental health and wellness education fun and exciting. GoZen, an innovative and engaging online social emotional learning program, integrates mindfulness and technology to make mindfulness practices approachable and relevant for students of all abilities. The GoZen program teaches children essential social and emotional learning skills through story, adventure, and interactive practice all wrapped up into animations. Just as modern technology is a tool to facilitate learning in reading, math, and science; technology can be an integral part of learning how to identify, express, and manage difficult emotions that inhibit learning and healthy relationships at school.
My students will use the GoZen program to learn mindfulness practices in order to manage emotions and improve concentration and decision making skills.
Mindfulness has been shown to help students who suffer from ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma, and learning disabilities learn to recognize and understand emotions and find new ways of coping and controlling attention and impulses. This program will help my students reduce anxiety, develop healthy relationships, manage difficult feelings, and increase self-control and concentration. These skills are vital to success in and out of the classroom.
