This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We believe that learning is part of life, with this in mind, we try to bring our STEAM Lab to life and avoid worksheets at all costs. Our students are consistently engaged in as many hands-on investigations as possible.

Our student body is incredibly diverse.

We are a Title I junior high school with students who come from some of our least affluent neighborhoods. Many of these students have little or no experience with science in Kindergarten through 6th grade. This is a serious problem and we do all that we can to provide nine years of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) activities in only the two years that students attend our school.

Our students have a strong desire to learn about our world and the ways that STEAM ideas come to life. We are facing serious problems with our environment and ecosystems; our students today will be the decision makers of tomorrow. It is critical that we provide access to relevant STEAM information that connects learning with their daily lives.

My Project

Our students have incredible ideas and love to bring them to life. One of the new tools we have in our STEAM Lab is a small CNC Machine that can engrave, cut and form 3D objects. This small machine uses router bits of various sizes and shapes to make different patterns and forms. Some bits are good for working with wood, others are better for acrylic. We can even cut soft metals and engrave plaques and trophies! The CNC machine does make a huge mess (mostly sawdust) all over the lab so we need a shop vac that we can connect to the CNC machine to keep things tidy!
