Our middle school students are an interesting bunch. They are in a state of transitioning from children to young adults. I recognize in them a great deal of potential, often untapped, that can do wonderful things. Our greatest challenge is finding out how to engage these unique individuals and draw out their potential into positive actions. Our school has a policy that says all students are engaged all of the time. One way that we can maximize student interest and engagement is through real life, real world examples of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM.) Bringing a small piece of the ocean into the classroom and into the school can go a long way toward this goal.
