This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The General Chemistry program at our high school is under an overhaul of the science curriculum to enhance the realistic challenges that students will be facing once they leave the high school bubble. The students in Master G's General Chemistry course is an unorthodox and unprecedented program at our high school that emphasizes learning to reach proficiency in analytical and critical thinking skills. The class consists of approximately 32 students each period for a total student enrollment of approximately 160 students. Most students come from neighboring Lake Elsinore, but also the surrounding areas of Canyon Lake, Corona, and Wildomar.

Students are uneasy about taking general chemistry, but the primary goal is to have them realize that success in a class like chemistry is to maintain a growth mindset mentality and realize the real-world connections a class like chemistry can have in their lives.

This course believes in every student's ability to succeed by taking a rigorous, challenging, realistic, and authentic project-based approach to learning in lieu of traditional approaches. We don't want students grasping for answers, but also having the ability to state with confidence why they are able to come up with them in a particular.

My Project

Mid-semester, there is always a call for new items to be invested in due to their consistent use.

The major item on the list needed to be funded quick is the 10 reams of paper; the school was put on notice a paper shortage and no more paper will be invested because of a budget drought; in addition, my calculators I had bought with my own money initially had been taken without permission from the class and my students are without calculators in class.

I also go through labs using paper plates as a means to avoid making major spills and my plate stock has dropped significantly. The class also use dry erase boards for our "Board Meeting" activities we do to discuss our ideas concerning chemistry concepts as a class and our only erasers are our hands or paper towels. The shoe boxes are also needed to provide more storage for our beakers also recently funded by philanthropists through DonorsChoose!

I really thank everyone for their generosity the past few projects posted. I really believe that your contribution has helped make students reach high learning gains for chemistry. Your contribution to this project will only further advance this agenda.
