Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our first semester STEM project is Water Rocket Launch. Every student will explore rocketry and the principles of space flight. Students work in teams with teacher supervision and construct and launch a rocket from a soda bottle and everyday materials that is powered by an air pump.

Our school has tremendous diversity.

Our demographics are as follows: African American = 32.0%, Asian/Pacific Islander = 12.9%, Hispanic = 50.5%, Native American = 0.2%, White/Anglo = 3.2%, Two or more ethnicities = 0.5%, Economically Disadvantaged = 80.8%, Limited English Proficiency = 35.9%, Bilingual/ESL = 18.5%, Special Education = 7.7%, and Gifted & Talented = 3.8%.

My Project

You are part of a team of engineers given the challenge of building a model rocket using a soda or water bottle that will be attached to a bicycle air pump which will be the source of propulsion or energy. You will make your rocket from everyday materials. Your goal is to have your rocket shoot up the highest and the straightest within your class. You'll research ideas online, learn about rocket design and flight, and work as a team to construct and test your rocket. The tape will be used to connect the fins of the rocket to the 2-Liter bottle body. Each team will design and test three fin designs.

STEM job creation over the next 10 years will outpace non-STEM jobs significantly, growing 17 percent, as compared to 9.8 percent for non-stem positions.

Jobs in computer systems design and related services are a field dependent on high-level math and problem-solving skills and are projected to grow 45 percent between 2008 and 2018. Our middle school STEM program will teach children how to think critically and solve problems.
