I am a sixth grade language arts teacher at a rural North Carolina middle school. My students range from learning disabled to academically gifted. Last year, I began a book club that has become a huge success. Each month, our club, comprised of sixth and seventh graders, reads a featured book. Then at the end of the month, we get together for food, fun, and a detailed discussion of the book. The book club has become a huge success, and my students are starting to blossom into wonderful readers. At our last club meeting, we had 49 students attend! The goal of the book club is to celebrate and foster a love of reading. For the first time in my teaching career, I now have students who can't wait read. At each meeting, we have detailed discussions of the novel's characters, plot, setting, and theme. At the end of each meeting, the highlight is when I reveal the next book of the month. As the year is getting underway, I am in need of more books to read as a club. Many of my students have requested that we read "Hoot," a popular young adult novel and a Newbery Honor book. I would love the opportunity to be able to share this wonderful novel with my book club. I am requesting 42 copies of this novel by Carl Hiaasen.
