Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school strives to balance academics, music, art and hard work.
The children in our rural charter school are from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds.
They have grown up together in the same small school with the same students and main teacher since first grade. As a community of learners, our classrooms support each other, and there is a familial feeling as the students grow and experience the curriculum together. Academically and socially, students have mixed strengths and weaknesses. Because our class plans to stay together for several years, we are able to grow our skills in many areas by working together.
My Project
In sixth grade we are studying the rise and fall of Rome, Islam and the Middle Ages. Students become inspired and involved in their learning when they have hands on activities. Creating a faux leather journal will give students a glimpse into the craft of book making and will become our journal to chart the stars like ancient scientists.
Having an excellent new reader in youth fiction, related to Europe and the Middle East that students can't put down, will encourage students to learn more about the modern complexities in the regions.
We will look at Arabic, calligraphy and geometric Islamic tessellations, using our dry-erase pens to practice with first, as we take this journey back in time.
