This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students will be learning about basic biology and human systems at the end of May into June. They are very curious about the natural world and have already started to explore with the microscopic lenses that I have, but they need more experience with actual microscopes. We have two microscopes that we can use with our students, but we don't have slides that can help expand their learning. My students are learning English, and I have found that they are most engaged when they are learning about the science of the world around them. Many of my students have been affected by climate change in their home countries, so they have a desire to learn about science and their environment that goes beyond what our curriculum currently offers.

The microscope slides will not only enhance their learning, it will allow them to return to the slides and converse with more details about what they saw.

As fascinating as the microscope lenses for their iPads are, they allow them to see the living organisms around them only briefly. The samples on the slides allow the students to really spend time with the samples and see what they notice.

I am hopeful that the snacks will be helpful for keeping my students motivated for the last few weeks of school, but I also know that their thirst for knowledge, especially scientific knowledge, is what really engages them. I would be so grateful for any help my students could receive to expand their knowledge of the environment around them!
