MICRO:BITS Support Online STREAM Learning

Help me give my students micro:bit BBC Micro-Controller club packs in order to continue hands-on, engaging STREAM lessons at home during online learning.

My Students

Our campus is a blended community of students who are GATE (gifted), ELL (second language), RSP (mild cognitive/behavioral abilities), SPED (more significant learning/behavioral abilities) and general education. We also have a diverse socio-economic group with students ranging from Title I (low-income) to those who live in ranch houses. I will be teaching 7th and 8th graders who may fall into all of these categories. Our school site isn't eligible for various state/federal funds that other schools qualify for. So, teachers often end up purchasing devices, supplies, and subscriptions on their own.

This year, I have the privilege of developing our new STREAM elective course to meet the under-served needs of those students who are interested in science, technology, robotics, engineering, art, and math.

Electives often level the playing field for students to be successful. One of my goals is to develop quality lessons and activities to promote computer science. I want my students to understand (and struggle with) the design process and be able to work collaboratively to solve problems and persevere. The challenge of starting a new elective with my students this year is that they will be online for a while without materials to use at home.

My Project

During our online learning time period, students will be investigating coding and robotics as part of their Computer Science module. Micro:bits are an incredible STREAM tool that can be used with several online programs that my students will be working through. Several of these program companies include CodeHS, Microsoft MakeCode, and Birdbrain Technologies.

Creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration will still be able to occur virtually for my students when they interact with each other online and use micro:bits to make and debug a variety of projects.

Micro:bits enable students to bring their coding and robotics to life in an engaging way. They are small (micro) programmable computers that have a variety of features and sensors (compass, lights, accelerometer, etc.) that provide students with opportunities to code and create certain outcomes.

Students will work collaboratively to design something they want the micro:bit to do/control. They will build the code for it and debug any problems. They will be able to use both block and text editors as the various programs provide both options.

Upon returning to the classroom for in-person instruction, students will be able to continue using the micro:bits throughout the year.
