This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My STEAM Magnet Kindergarten students have been working hard on their coding skills. They are learning and enjoying the wonders of programming and coding magic! I am in a constant state of awe at what they can create. However, it is time to take them to the next level in their computer science journey.

Research has shown that learning to code and using digital skills from an early age has encouraged creative thinking, problem-solving skills, and has enhanced life chances.

Therefore, providing access and opportunities for my kindergarteners to begin learning the essentials of programming is essential.

With your help, I would like to provide my students with a class set of BBC Micro:bits and an extra set of batteries. Currently, my students have been using the program's online simulator to program feeling and emotion emojis which connects to their social-emotional learning that they have worked on all year long. My students have been learning about feelings and regulating feelings using coping skills. They have been coding tutorials on Scratch Jr. to teach their peers about coping with feelings. Having the class set of Micro:bits would be a perfect engaging tool to extend their social-emotional learning while also understanding the foundations of computer programing. We would also be using the Micro:bits to extend lessons in health, math, and science as they can be programmed with motion. We would turn them into pedometers to track healthy habits. The photo case is a perfect storage for each individual Micro:bit. Not only would it prolong the life of each Micro:bit, it also teaches the students proper care for electronics. The label maker would help as an organizational tool for each Micro:bit.
