Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every student in our school building has the opportunity to attend my STEAM classes once or twice a week. During my classes, we get to stretch our brains as we complete design challenges, explore science concepts, and use creative technology tools. I literally have a dream job and amazingly talented and sweet students to work with!

Our school is an urban, low income school that serves over 700 students from a wide array of backgrounds and cultures.

This year, 100% of our students qualify for free breakfasts and lunches, which has been a wonderful opportunity for each and every student to have a full tummy ready to support them through their day of learning! It is a joy to watch our students' joy and passion for learning ignite through the hands-on, authentic learning we are able to to in STEAM!

My Project

We are expanding our learning opportunities this year! Our STEAM room is getting a MAKER makeover. In our re-designed space, students will be able to apply their learning in their homerooms and throughout our building to create projects of their choice.

Through the opportunities afforded them with micro:bit controllers, students will have the opportunity to use coding and electronics practices to create exciting projects.

Students can use these micro controllers in many different ways. They can design and code their own robots, create virtual pets, collaborate with friends to invent a board game, and SO MUCH MORE!

I am hoping these opportunities will empower my students to show of their learning in new ways while building important 21st century skills that will help them succeed throughout the remainder of their school careers and as they join the work force. I want my students to know how much potential they have and to dream big dreams, and I truly believe that creating in our Makerspaces is an important part of helping that happen.
