Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the reading specialist at a low-income high school in rural Utah. I teach reading interventions for a block reading class. We are Title I school with several ESL and SpEd students. Currently, 1/4 of our population has an IEP, 1/4 are ELL learners with several immigrating to the states within the last year. I focus on the students who are just falling through the cracks. They have not been identified to need an IEP but they are clearly not on grade level. This disadvantage can make high school feel impossible. Most of the students in my class are reading at a 7th grade or lower level. How are they supposed to understand, analyze, and apply Romeo and Juliet or Animal Farm if they can't read the text?

My students are wonderful; we just need a little help with reading at grade level.

I have several levels in my class. We would benefit so much from your donation. Every little bit helps us reach our goal. Your donation will help more than just one class, it will help several students across 9th to 12th grade not to mention the students in years to come.

My Project

Removing barriers to education is key especially during Covid. Chromebooks are great but my students struggle using a touchpad in order to access the websites we use. By providing us with mice you will help remove that barrier and allow students to access websites with ease. They will then be able to design projects and draw on their devices.

Books, books, books.

My students need actual books to read. Online reading on Chromebooks all day is so hard on students. Letting them check out books and take them home when we do virtual learning is key to getting students to read. We need to encourage reading and we need to remove the barriers that students face. Let’s give them some freedom to get off the devices and pick up a book that interests them.
