Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Picture it. Class size-30. What am I to do? I Incorporate various novels, provide options for writing tasks that include picture prompts. My quote, "You have a responsibility to succeed. Failure is not an option." You have to try even when it's hard. Good readers read and good writers write.

We have about 950 students from a low income neighborhood.

My students are eager to learn but have not had much experience working with technology or even a variety of books. My school is has a growing number of Spanish speaking students. We also have a large special services population. Many of our students come to us below grade level and it can be a challenge to get these students where they need to be before the end of the year. Our school has a great rapport with the community. We host events to bring in friends and family to support the efforts of the students. The most important thing about our school is that we have students who try. They may struggle with different concepts but they will ask for help, go to tutoring sessions, or ask for extra assignments to assist them. I have been teaching in this school for 11 years and I have come across many different children; however, one thing that has remained constant is their spirit.

My Project

The EasiSpeak Pro microphones will be such a benefit to my classroom. Using these microphones will help students increase reading fluency, listening skills and comprehension. Also, students will be able to use these microphones as a means of self-editing their writing. It has been proven that when you read aloud, you catch mistakes you would ordinarily miss. Using the EasiSpeak Pros will help students develop confidence in presenting and sharing writing. When studying propaganda, students create commercials. In the past, I noticed that the sound quality wasn't that great. Using these microphones would allow students to have options. They could prerecord their script or as they go along. I discovered these little jewels when I was observing a fellow teacher. I know these microphones will bring so much ownership to my students.

Middle school students like to be heard.

Some of them struggle with finding their voice and those are the students who won't say much in any class period. These microphones will not only improve my instruction, but they will ensure that a positive learning environment is created. Children tend to share more and take in new information if they feel safe. EasiSpeak Pro microphones will send the message that, "I have the floor and what I have to say is important."
