My Project

I teach 12-17 year old males and females at the KC Juvenile Detention Center. I'm also in charge of the school library. Since I started here in 2019, I've made it my goal to get materials the kids want to read. We have high interest/low level books for those who are reading well below grade level. Our collection of urban fiction - "hood books" as many of my students have dubbed them - is pretty extensive for our small library. We've also added more to our graphic novel section.

A while ago, some students who primarily spoke Spanish couldn't find books they wanted to read in our library.

As I mentioned earlier, we have a big selection of high interest/low level books thanks to another DonorsChoose project. I pieced together that those students weren't able to read much English at all so the high/low books were too difficult. They were hoping to read Spanish editions of some of the popular novels they saw their peers reading.

The wish list I've created is mostly books in Spanish that we already have in the library in English. This way any future Spanish-speaking students can read the same books their peers are reading. I appreciate your help in making our little library more inclusive.
