Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I love that I get to teach in a Dual-Language classroom and with a diverse set of students from a variety of home cultures from throughout Latin America. It is important for my students to see themselves and their home cultures represented in the materials throughout the classroom, but especially in dramatic play, where they can explore items and scenarios that are familiar to them.
Engaging with familiar materials allows for more authentic and meaningful experiences because students will make connections with their peers and teachers through play.
Sharing a similar background and Spanish language with my Dual-Language allows us to connect during play, daily interactions, and within the classroom environment, which in turn help develop more meaningful relationships and community. We will be making play food items, such as tortillas and pupusas, with the felt so that students may play for months to come. The addition of these materials will enhance the multicultural and culturally-representative items already in use and help provide even more meaningful experiences for my students.
