Mexican Oaxacan Sculpture

My students need armature wire, papier mache paste and acrylic paint to create the whimsical animal sculptures inspired by the wooden carvings from Oaxaca, Mexico.

My Students

Let the imagination soar with the inspiration of a cultural discovery in Mexican folk art. My 8th grade project helps students explore three dimensional papier mache sculpture in a fantasy animal creation. This project also includes a written story to reveal the symbolic meaning of the creature.

My student population is around 600.

They are from a Western Carolina mountain, rural community. The experience of a visual art class has enriched my students beyond measure. It strengthens their higher order thinking skills through independent work. They find self-actualization and self-expression. Some of my students tell me that they can feel a positive, creative energy in the art classroom. Many of my students have come from a lower income environment and have never had the experience of working with different art media. By exposing these students to art making in a variety of areas, many will connect with a creative force that may become a career. For some of my students, the art room is a natural outlet for the artistic expression that they already carry with them. Students flourish in my art room. It is a safe environment that sustains deep learning for all.

My Project

My students come into 8th grade excited to create Oaxacan Sculptures. They have waited from 6th grade to make these wonderful creatures. They are challenged to imagine a creature that has never been seen before and to create a story , myth or legend that brings their fantasy creature to life. Some of my students will combine the physical attributes of several animals to generate a completely new species, while others will change the color and purpose of an animal. Students may also link the symbolic meaning of the creature to other cultural traditions such as Native American. I have even had a few students that created a fantasy sculpture of their own live pet-with bright popping colors and painted patterns. The learning experience that my students gain in this project is tremendous. They work throughout a six-week period to construct from a wire armature to a newspaper form to a painted free-standing statue. The completed sculptures are displayed throughout our school.

I buy the majority of my own classroom art supplies.

This has become impossible for me to do. I need art supplies for my kids! The art budget was cut to $0 for the 2010-2011 school year. Without the materials my students will lose the creative knowledge growth potential. The art supplies will enable the students to create art work that is genuine and accomplished. With these art supplies, I can teach my students to see art as a vital life force.
