My students are from a large, urban community that welcomes families from all over the globe. They bring a special blend of linguistic diversity, background knowledge, prior experiences and culture to our school. We are a Title I school in a low-income community, and I have twenty-eight students in my class. Free breakfast and free lunch are available to every child in our building each day.
I grew up in this city, and I truly believe I am meant to teach here and give back all I can to my hometown.
My school is a magical place. Despite the challenging home lives of many, my students walk in the door of our quaint little building and are welcomed with heartfelt greetings and genuine smiles, and they are ready to be the best they can be.
Our staff provides specific academic, emotional, and behavioral support to students to meet their specific needs so they can reach their personal potential. I am blessed to witness incredible student growth during each school year, a result of the dedication of my colleagues and hard work of our students.
My Project
In order for students to become successful scientists, they must be fluent in measuring and using the metric system. Because this is not the primary system of measurement in the United States, students often struggle to make sense of it, and therefore, struggle to make precise scientific measurements.
Concrete materials to help secure a solid understanding of the metric system are a critical component to upper elementary classrooms.
Students benefit from experiencing new learning, not just being told about content. They need high-quality, hands-on opportunities to make connections and internalize new content. These tools will help them move along this continuum of understanding.
