My students need access to a color printer in the art room in order to download and print images with which to work from before and during various art projects. They also need watercolor paper to complete metaphoric self-portraits.

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
USING ART TO CHANGE SCHOOL CLIMATE!! My inner-city students are in desperate need of witnessing the power of art to change their perception of school.
My high school students are from the inner-city of a major metropolitan area.
All 1100 students receive free or reduced price lunch, which is an indicator of the low-income environments from which they come from. The school has lacked funding from the city for quite some time, which has directly impacted the budget of the art program.
Despite these unfortunate circumstances, my students are amazing. When I began teaching art at this high school this year it became immediately clear how much they WANTED quality art instruction. My students crave the opportunity to express themselves and ideas in a creative manner, but have yet to experience true quality art materials in which to do so.
My Project
What I need more than anything at this point is a laser jet color printer in order for students to research and download images from which to work from on certain projects like the metaphorical self-portrait unit. I would also use this for students to type written artist statements to accompany their work. In addition I need acrylic paint paint, paint brushes, and quality watercolor paper for students to work on. Since this is my first request on Donors Choose, I had to prioritize which of these supplies I need most and decided on the 22x30 140lb watercolor paper.
This is just the beginning steps in my goal to establish a true, thriving art program here at this high school. My headmaster shares this vision. I spent the past three years using art to help transform one of the lowest performing schools in Massachusetts into a level 1 school, and plan to repeat this here at a high school that desperately needs it.
The Metaphoric Self-Portrait unit explores students identity.
While showing students how art can have deep meaning, they are challenged to use mixed-media in order to create a piece that incorporates representational symbols that make up who they are. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for all adolescents to confront their identity - especially adolescents from impoverished communities. What stories will they tell? How will they use symbolic visual imagery to do so?
