Metamorphosis First Hand

My students need a butterfly classroom kit, 2 marshmallow plants, a praying mantis nursery kit, and lady bug supplies.

All children are all touched by the wonders of nature no matter where they come from, what their backgrounds or socio-economic status. My kids are no different. My first grade classroom is as diverse as the natural world we want to study.

Many of my students come from single parent families, some come from homes where English is spoken as a second language. All have been affected by the economic downturn. Some live in apartment like dwellings with limited access to the natural wonders of the great outdoors.

The butterfly kit provides each of my students with their own live caterpillar in its own habitat complete with food and care instructions. There will be a few caterpillars left over for instructional and learning experiences and to make sure each child has a caterpillar that moves all the way through the exciting and inspiring metamorphosis process. The other insect kits will provide for a variety of experiences with life cycles and the various roles insects play in our environment. All promise to provide high interest participation in the learning process. This project will bring some of the magic of metamorphosis right to them, right before their very eyes where they can see, feel, interact with, observe and ultimately set free insects they've watch change and develop from egg to larvae to become beautiful winged creatures. They will be able to experience amazing bugs, tiny creatures that generate big excitement. Nothing thrills young students more than actually seeing, interacting with, and caring for live creatures in their classroom. I want to bring that excitement to my students and teach them science at the same time. And maybe my students will understand a little more about how they, too, will develop and grow to be all they can be. I hope to encourage them as well as inspire and teach them with this project. When providing learning experiences for my students like this in the past, I have watched their enthusiasm bubble over and their interest levels increase for all learning opportunities. When we had a special day for releasing our butterflies I heard more than one child say, "This is the best day of my life!"

When you buy an Amazing Bugs product, which is what I have requested in the materials list, you generate a donation to purchase and protect one acre of threatened habitat to help save endangered species. Since 1989, students and teachers participating in the Big Gift to the Earth initiative have raised $5.6 million to purchase and conserve more than 360,000 acres of precious rainforest and ocean habitat. Not only will you give a gift that will teach and inspire my students, but you will help insure that the habitat of the creatures they learn to love will be there when they grow up. What a wonderful gift!
