I don't want my Art II, III students to create paper mosaics like they did in Art I. I want my advanced students to create a real mosaic with real glass. I want my student to know what it feels like to be a 'real' artist.
I have 30 Art II, Art III students who love to experiment with new types of media.
I have these same students everyday for 55 minutes a day for the entire school year. I know them very well because I taught them last year in Art I and Art II. They love the mosaics I have created and they often ask if they can make them too however there is not enough money in the school art budget for mosaic supplies. The school budget is only enough to provide the basic supplies for my Art I, II, III, IV, 180 students. I have many talented students who are more than eager to get started. Last year I was able to purchase some stain glass but there was not enough money to purchase canvas or resin. My students have been waiting a year to create these mosaics. I hope we can get funded because the students would be delighted!
All through art in school, my students have only been able to create using the 'normal' mediums such as paint, paper, and colored pencil because of the cost. The art budget barely covers the cost of such basics. I am not only an art teacher but I am also a professional artist. I often share my own artwork with my students. They love to look at it and always ask me a lot of questions. They are truly interested in creating some of this art for themselves. I would love for them to experience creating a mosaic using the same authentic materials that professional artists use. I feel this is a project they will keep forever and always be proud to show off. Most of them will not otherwise have this opportunity again.
I feel this Merry Mosaic project is one that anybody at any level of art can succeed in doing.
I, myself often use mosaic in my own art making. I would love to pass this on to my enthusiastic students who want to experiment with new mediums.
