My students need mentor texts, such as Possum Magic to help build and sharpen comprehension skills. In third grade, students are expected to understand the meaning of the story and the importance of those words.

My Students
I absolutely love being a third grade teacher! This past year, I was able to teach a few of my former students from first grade, which made the year extra special. My students were actively engaged in their learning, couldn't put down books, loved anything hands-on, and asked a million and two questions (of course I tried to answer them all). Their desire to learn astounded me!
With the new year approaching, I am already thinking ahead about how I want my classroom to run and my goals for myself and my students.
Our day is always busy... you could say nonstop! From math and reading rotations to writing conferences to squeezing in some time for science/social studies. This year, I really want to focus on strengthening whole group reading with the use of read alouds and mentor texts. These texts are used to help in comprehensions skills from story elements to theme. In the past students have struggled with various skills and I want to help them get stronger and love to read!
My Project
Whole group reading time is essential to introducing a comprehension focus. The best way to do this is through the use of mentor texts. I often spend countless hours researching what books are best suited for a skill. Once one is selected, I have to craft a lesson around how to introduce the skill and the questions to ask to teach the skill. My personal teaching library lacks the titles I come across for these skills and I would love to further enhance my personal collection.
By having these texts easily accessible, I can refer back to them over the course of the year as review of a skill or use the book again to show my students that books help us build more than one skill.
I love reading to my students and they enjoy when I use voices to make the stories more interesting. I want each of my students to walk away feeling confident in story comprehension. I don't want my students to focus on just reading the words, but truly read for the meaning and find a deeper connection to a story.
