My goal as a teacher is to create a fun, supportive and engaging environment for each of my students. My classroom is made up of a diverse population of all races and academic levels. Our school is one of the only fully inclusive schools in our district. Kindness and respect is a normal occurrence in my classroom. Most of our school population comes from students living in government subsidized housing. Even though the percentage of students who qualify for free or reduced rate lunch is high, it is not high enough for us to qualify for government funding. Each student is taught that their brain is a muscle and like any muscle, it needs to exert itself to get stronger. The students make their brains stronger by accepting challenges and preserving through difficult assignments.
My Project
A mentor is someone who inspires you to invest in yourself. With the addition of mentor texts to our classroom, the goal will be just that, self-investment. Mentor texts will provide an environment for discussion, practice, and clarity in my classroom. Each book will have a significant purpose to educate and develop students reading and writing skills. These books have been shown to educate students to summarize, identify the cause and effect, see correct grammar, identify and use figurative language and learn to make inferences when reading.
Every person has had a mentor in their life to help them grow as a person, these books will help my students grow as readers and writers, and ultimately develop skills for the real world.
New skill development takes practice! By having books which teach and reinforce these skills, we will be able to build up the confidence and critical thinking skills of our future!
