it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My urban students not only face the typical challenges of teens, but also the specific challenges of living in an urban environment. Immigration, poverty, homelessness, violence, all add to students lacking tools that are necessary for their learning.
The items requested will help teach students productive ways to handle their stressors and be the best learners they can be.
Many studies show that students need to feel safe and have their basic needs met in order to learn, but my students often come from home insecure backgrounds, are impoverished, or are in foster care, not to mention the high incarceration rate of the community. All the items selected were chosen for their research-based effectivity in helping traumatized students feel safe by giving them these tools.
I selected several self-regulation books on teen anxiety, anger, and depression because these are very typical challenges my urban high school students deal with. I also included a variety of adult coloring books and one for the wall, along with markers, because the majority of my students find this self-soothing. As they self-soothe, we can engage in class discussions on academics or in teaching. I teach ELA, for example, so as they color, we might talk about symbolism. It helps students with PTSD, as many of my students have, to regulate as they work. I purchased the markers so they could make expressive creative work; they don't have their own markers. I selected lollipops as an oral self-soothing to use while writing and to award the students if they extend themselves like speaking socially.
