Mental Health Matters! Positive Examples in Kids Literature

My Students

Located in our nation's capital, my Title I school serves the needs of a diverse community of students and families, particularly English language learners. In my current classroom, at least six different languages are spoken among all of my students, each of them equally beautiful and complex.

At the beginning of my year, it is difficult for my students to speak with one another because of the obvious language barriers but as a family, we develop a sense of vulnerability and safety, and together we learn to make mistakes and trust one another.

Through this process, I see my students begin to develop friendships, despite their inability to fully communicate through words. This is one of the most humbling, profound experiences to witness, and it cannot fairly be described by the limitations of my own language.

I am proud to serve my students and will continue to work with my families to improve the well being of all people in fair, respectful ways.

My Project

Social-emotional learning is so important for young children. As kids get older, they begin to create their identity based on their experiences with the surrounding world. Sometimes, it can be hard to make sense of that world, which can lead to feelings of fear, anxiety, and stress. Without the proper techniques to name and manage these emotions, children will not be able to learn how to independently overcome their personal obstacles.

One way to teach kids about creating a positive relationship with their mental health is to use books.

I am requesting different books that deal with topics like anxiety, stress management, body image, calming techniques, and perseverance. Even at a young age, students can start to learn how to regulate their own emotions so that when they experience these feelings, they can name them and realize that they have the strength to appropriately manage them.
