My Students

The challenge facing my students in Physics is they want to do a range of interesting and engaging labs. We have gained force tables through DonorsChoose, but have nothing to investigate other concepts. My students are motivated and will make good use of any investment in their learning environment.

My students are very good people that come from very poor living conditions.

They are committed to improving themselves and becoming a constructive part of our complicated global society. They are young men and women with great dreams but no resources who come from all over Boston, some with over a two hour commute one way. They are remarkably innocent and still have faith that the public education system will enable them to succeed. Many of them stay after school for hours working in any way they can find to improve their skills and academics.

My Project

I am requesting engaging hands-on lab apparatuses that cover a broad range of important physics concepts. The Maglev Train lab has four different options to test frictionless propulsion by electromagnetic force. The spring apparatus comes with six springs that can be set up in parallel to test the effectiveness of multiple spring systems. The Ballistic Pendulum is a versatile experiment that can demonstrate both the conservation of momentum and the conservation of energy as well as energy lost in inelastic collisions. My students will be able to measure first hand the significant effects of air resistance and friction on motion and then create sophisticated computer graphs. These hands-on laboratories and demonstrations will help them better understand the true nature of the physics of everyday life.

My students deserve the honor to be part of the solutions of the future.

They have to overcome significant obstacles just to graduate high school. They have a background and perspective that will allow them to better understand the problems that our society and planet faces. They may be able to approach these problems in novel ways. Effort and resources must be invested to provide them with the skills and education necessary so that we don't lose the advantage of the unique perspective that they offer.
