Memorable Mentor Texts!

My students need more literature to read and listen to. These books will serve as mentor texts and independent readers for my students. This collection also provides professional resources to enhance my teaching of all texts.

My Students

I teach a group of fun loving and enthusiastic KINDERGARTEN learners. My students come to school full of life, ready to learn with the highest hopes for their day. My school is located in Bellport, New York, and my students come from diverse backgrounds and economic statures. Many of my students receive free or reduced price lunch. Some of my students are English Language Learners; they come from homes where the dominant language is Spanish. My students are building their vocabularies all while learning their letters, numbers and to read.

My students love books and are excited to read and be read to.

I am currently teaching in a workshop model. The children are reading independently and with partners many times a day. I want to my children to want to read all the time. I believe one of the best way to foster this is to show them great mentor texts. Mentor texts are rich literature that show students how to delve into their books.

My Project

My classroom is run in a workshop format. The children are immersed with books through out the day. They are listening to read alouds, reading independently and reading with partners. One way that I get my students excited about reading is through Read alouds using mentor texts. The mentor texts in this grant are fictional books with amazing stories and great illustrations. These texts help foster a love of reading in my students. These books help to build language skills. They help promote more conversation in the room. The children will love to discuss the illustrations and the text . I will use these books to teach them many reading and comprehension strategies throughout the year. These books will become the favorites in our room. This collection also provides professional resources to help enhance my teaching with these books as well as many others!
