My Project

My students are academically high in most mathematical areas. They love to learn and are eager to take on the challenge of a new math skill however they have continued to struggle with calculating area and perimeter. Students do learn math skills in different ways and at different paces. While most students can comprehend a new skill from repetitive problems and teacher led lessons many of them still need a concrete hands on activity that allows them to perform the skill and/or see the skill visually.

These blocks provide a STEM based activity for my students to see their area and perimeter problems come to life.

Even though area and perimeter can be calculated with algebraic formulas it is still a difficult concept if they cannot visually imagine why the measurements are important and how the formulas work to provide the proper measurements for fencing, borders or even walls of a house.

I want to continue to lift their confidence and watch them grow. This project will give me a tool that I truly believe will impact their ability to advance with working out problems for area and perimeter.
