This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach fourth grade in the west end of Louisville, Kentucky. My students face a barrage of social and economic issues. One hundred percent of our school population receives free lunch based on family income. Additionally, each student goes home with a backpack full of food every Friday to last them through the weekend.
Despite the many challenges my students face they come to school very eager and willing to learn.
Once each week my students have the opportunity to go to the school library. They always come rushing back with their new books in hand, very excited to show off what they have picked. My aim is to foster that love and passion for learning, and not let that excitement be limited to once per week.
My Project
The materials in this project will help my students gain a better understanding of the memoir genre. We are preparing to write our own memoirs and students need a base of good mentor texts to use as a guide in writing.
The texts selected represent my class demographic, as well as the varied interests of my students.
I have carefully crafted this list of texts to represent the three different types of memoir we will be studying. We will begin studying books like My Brother Martin to learn about the types of memoir that explore special relationships between people. The others selected explore the connections between objects and ideas.
