My students are English Language Learners who have a wide range of English language levels. They are students who are enrolled in general education classes but need support in developing their English language skills in order to excel in their other subjects. Some of them are also special education students who need multiple means of accessing the curriculum.
In order to fully access the grade level curriculum, my students need support in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English.
This will help them be their most successful in school and their future career paths.
Younger elementary school students spend a lot of their time on the rug with their teacher, interacting with books and other hands-on materials. It is important for my students that their teacher is able to use the whiteboard and chart paper to support their oral language development by providing linguistic frames and relevant vocabulary at the same time.
Many of our students benefit from hands-on materials and the sand tray will allow them to actually get their hands in the sand!
The students will be able to use the sand tray to practice letter and word formation as well as to work on spelling vocabulary words. This three dimensional strategy will help all students, including special education students who need additional supports, retain the information better than only writing on paper.
