Meeting Sensory Needs to Increase Learning

My students need opportunities for sensory breaks. The weighted blanket and the fish tunnel will give them activities to help them self-regulate and get ready to continue learning.

My Students

The students I work with are in kindergarten, first and second grade. They are on Individualized Education Plans or in the Student Solution Team process. I work in the classrooms and pull them out of the classroom to work in my room. They work on reading, writing, math, and behavior goals.

Many of the students also need sensory breaks during the school day to help them be more successful in school.

Even though my students face challenges they are all eager to learn.

My Project

The fish tunnel and the weighted blanket are two items students could use in the sensory room. The items in the sensory room will include movement items, deep pressure items, visual items, tactile items, scented items, and auditory items. These items will cover most of the different sensory needs.

With the help of the Sensory Room my students will be able to self-regulate their emotions and behaviors.

Each student that needs sensory activities would be given a sensory diet that includes activities to specifically help them during their school day. Some students would have scheduled sensory times, other students would need to use the sensory room when their behaviors escalate.
