This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I will be teaching in an Early Childhood Special Education classroom. Our focus will be on helping young children develop early and functional skills that will help to build a foundation for learning and success. All of my students are considered at risk and have a diagnosed special that may range from autism, blindness, communication delays, social/behavioral challenges, and motor difficulties.
Many of my students live in lower socioeconomic neighborhoods and may not have access to a range of tools to meet their educational and functional needs.
In order to meet these needs, they require enrichment and adaptations in all areas of development. As their teacher, I it is my passion to get creative and make that happen for my students. My goal every year, regardless of ability, is to spark my students' natural curiosity and develop a love of learning that will follow them for a lifetime.
My Project
Learning happens in every minute of every day for our young students. Each transition, social interaction, story, and group time means opportunities to practice a wide range of skills. Using a wide range of sensory materials has been an effective way for me to ensure that every child has a functional and enjoyable way to participate in daily class activities while still meeting their basic developmental needs.
Many of my students face sensory differences that significantly impact their ability to engage and participate in everyday activities.
Items like the durable light cube and attachable vibrating sensory tray will allow me to give them access to visual and tactile stimulation while also working on IEP goals such as communication, social engagement, pre-academic skills, and motor development. Items like the weighted lap pad, wobble seats, light filters, and theraputty will give them the sensory feedback to participate in class activities without being over or under stimulated. Meeting the sensory needs of students is often a puzzle, but these materials will provide my students will tools that will put them on the path towards success!
