My Project

Yao Xiao visited our library a year ago through the LGBTQ Writers in Schools program, and was a terrific speaker. Now we are requesting funding to bring her back to meet a new class!

Students arrive to class a hunger to meet working scholars and artists who are stars in their fields and have also made a difference in the world.

Ms. Xiao's graphic memoir is a story of being a young, queer immigrant in a new country, and struggling with her parents' lack of acceptance of her sexuality. It's a story about living between two worlds, America and China, and falling in love with NYC. My students have been reading her work, writing and drawing, and dreaming of a time when they can ask the author questions!

In my Guest Writers class, students read the authors' work carefully and write analytical papers as well as creative pieces, poems, and fiction. They have also worked on a list of questions for the author, and they are all prepared to interview her about the inspiration behind the book and her writing process. Through learning about Ms. Xiao as an author, students will gain insight into the process of writing books and the self-reflection and dedication necessary to become a writer or any kind of professional.

All students in the school are invited to attend the author event. The students in my guest writers class will lead the Q&A, but the audience will be comprised of anyone who wants to attend. This is an important community event to bring us all back together on Zoom after COVID.
