Meeting Don Tate and Learning About George Moses Horton
My students need to meet Don Tate, who is an authority on George Moses Horton. They also need copies of Poet: The Remarkable Story of George Moses Horton.
My students are from the countryside of Chatham County and from the city of Pittsboro (pop. 3,743). We are a Title I school, over 40% of our students are participating in a free or reduced-price lunch program, and approximately 80% of our students have access to the Internet at home. Despite the obstacles associated with low-income living, students at my school are tenacious and motivated. Our alumni are consistently on honor roll at N. High School; where H. Middle School students matriculate after 8th grade.
My Project
George Moses Horton was the first Southern African-American man to be published. Acclaimed author-illustrator Don Tate tells an inspiring and moving story of the talent and determination in his book, Poet: The Remarkable Story of George Moses Horton. George Moses Horton was a slave born at the end of the 18th century. He lived in Chatham County, North Carolina and overcame all adversities to learn how to read and publish a book of poetry, The Poetical Works Of George M. Horton, The Colored Bard Of North-Carolina, To Which Is Prefixed The Life Of The Author, Written By Himself, George Horton.
Our school would like to invite Don Tate, author of The Remarkable Story of George Moses Horton, to our school to help create the inaugural George Moses Horton day at our school.
Through this project, the beauty of this author’s story would be shared with the students of H. Middle School, who would be left with the knowledge of George Moses Horton’s love of words and how they took him on a remarkable journey.
