Meeting Basic Needs to Create Healthier Students, Ready to Learn
Help me give my students small food and drink items to help regulate blood sugar, nausea, and hunger as well as other basic items that make the school day easier.
I work in a large high school where I care for over 1500 students each year in grades 9-12. Many of my students have complex medical needs requiring extensive healthcare to have the opportunity to attend school.
More than 75% of my students come from low-income households, which means that many may not have access to adequate healthcare outside of school.
As the sole healthcare provider in my building, my goal is to provide the best care possible for students that may not otherwise receive it.
My Project
When we talk about students' academic performances, you really need to start by looking at their health. In a high school with 1500 students, it is easy to miss meeting the basic needs of students.
I have students come into my office daily complaining of nausea, low blood sugar, dizziness, and stomachaches.
Many times, I find that a bottle of water, a peppermint, or some crackers are a good alternative to get them feeling better and ready to learn. My students go through a box of feminine products every week. With the help of this project, I will be able to help my students reach their highest potential by meeting basic needs.
