In truth, this entire endeavor--teaching students to read who never learned in their first language--has stretched me more as a teacher than anything else in my career. \r\n\r\nThis project did not go exactly as I planned, primarily because this population has such unique needs. While the entire education world is touting The Science of Reading (phonics) as our cure-all, kids who can't yet distinguish between certain sounds in English sometimes need different approaches, and I have spent the last two years learning how best to teach them. \r\n\r\nIn the end, what this project did was ensure that we had absolutely everything we needed to figure it out. Highlighters to find and read our weekly sight words? Here. Colored counters to visually segment words? Here. Journals for students practice brain-to-hand connections? Here. Games to play to practice our social language? Here. (Trouble is the perennial favorite!)\r\n\r\nIt has been such an amazing (and challenging journey, but now, these students are decoding most short words (vowel teams are still tricky) independently and comprehending text for the first time in their lives. We are launching them into independent reading next semester. \r\n\r\nMy preference is always to proceed with things as planned, but that wasn't possible in this case. However, looking at the outcomes now, this project has been invaluable in helping us get here. They were very excited. Several of my students from previous years, have stopped by to check out the seats. Those students wish I had the chairs when they were in class. Even teachers come by to enjoy the comfort once in a while. \r\nBecause of the success of the chairs, I plan to look for other options to offer comfortable seats for students to sit and read. I've purchased some small dry erase boards that double as a writing surface. Students can use those to write their written responses to reading questions.
