My students are pregnant and/or parenting teenagers. They come to our school for an education and we assist them with childcare while they are in class. We are community-based and many organizations work out of our school to benefit our students and the community we serve. I am proud to work here because I know that helping these young women get a high school diploma helps them, their children, and our community.
Most of my students are below grade level in reading.
I take special care in choosing the books we read so that they are relevant and of high interest to my students.
My students and I will read this coming-of-age novel together in class. For those who are choosing to learn virtually, classes will be recorded via Zoom and students may access those classes through the online learning management system Canvas. By working together as a group, students who struggle with comprehension will have a better understanding.
Online and classroom discussions will talk about death, art, family relationships, and gender roles.
Students will have weekly writing assignments and a research project to finish at the completion of the novel.
I chose this novel because I believe my students will relate to the protagonist, Delores Price. I believe the story will sustain their interest and they will enjoy reading it.
