Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I see students in small groups that allow them an opportunity to connect with another adult that is rooting for their success. My groups change throughout the year; it is likely I will teach and enrich the education of many students in the school from grades 1-5. The students who join my space need support in the area of foundational mathematics. My students participate in hands-on math activities that support their current development. Practicing mindfulness and a growth mindset is so important to these amazing learners who need additional experiences to enrich learning. I am fortunate to teach the most amazing mathematicians who are simply looking for someone to unlock their potential.
My role as a wellness representative in the school allows me to positively impact the lives of all our students.
I have taken on an additional role to provide wellness activities to all the staff within my school. With the current climate of the school system, teachers need positive outlets for self-care. When teachers care for themselves, they in turn care for their students.
My Project
The funding for this project will allow me to attend a year-long professional development through Breathe for Change, a digital wellness, SEL, and yoga teacher training. The course is designed specifically for teachers by Dr. Ilana Nankin. In her research, she found that teacher well-being and effective teaching are directly connected. Happy teachers make successful students.
The knowledge I learn in this training will be used to plan and provide inclusive trauma-informed yoga classes for staff and students within my district.
During the course, I will increase my knowledge of trauma-informed practices, equity, and social justice. I can’t wait to be a part of this movement that recognizes the importance of wellness and social-emotional learning within the school system!
