Medieval Faire

My students need folding tables and art supplies to complete their seventh grade culminating activity in Medieval studies.

My Students

What is more exciting than a street fair replicating life in Medieval England? That's what students will experience as they research the roles of those who lived in the Middle Ages. They will use this research to create a booth or display at our annual "Medieval Faire" attended by the sixth grade.

My students participate in the Humanities Academy at our urban middle school in California.

The focus of this academy is incorporating the arts with their academic subjects. The students who attend our program reflect the ethnic and socioeconomic make-up of our community. There are many ethnicities represented as well as students from various socioeconomic levels. I have several classes of gifted students, but also teach classes where the students are more challenged academically. Most of the students in my classes strive to do their best, but some struggle with issues both academic and personal, that affects their performance.

My Project

The Medieval Faire is the highlight of the seventh grade for most of our students. It is a chance for them to display their artistic talents as well as demonstrate their understanding of the medieval period in history. The art supplies provided will enhance the quality of their projects which includes elaborate display boards and medieval craft items. The folding tables will provide a way for students to display their projects. As a result of this project, I hope my students will have a thorough understanding and appreciation of life in medieval times. The faire is both educational and philanthropic as the students collect "bartered goods" [canned food] for the items sold at their booths. The canned food items are then distributed to a food pantry at a local church.

With our country's emphasis on standardized testing, I hope my students will look beyond the textbook and enjoy a more experiential activity.

With the materials provided, my students will have the opportunity to experience, rather than just read about life in the Middle Ages.
