My students participate in the Humanities Academy at our urban middle school in California. The focus of this academy is incorporating the arts with their academic subjects. The students who attend our program reflect the ethnic and socioeconomic make-up of our community. There are many ethnicities represented as well as students from various socioeconomic levels. I have several classes of gifted students, but also teach classes where the students are more challenged academically. Most of the students in my classes strive to do their best, but some struggle with issues both academic and personal, that affects their performance.
