This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Though the students at Renaissance School of the Arts (RSA) deal with enormous challenges on a daily basis., they still show up cheerfully and eager to learn. RSA students exemplify they're community, by being talented, kind, tenacious, honest, dedicated, hilarious, intuitive, and creative.

We are a public, Title 1, Performing Arts Middle School that serves one of the highest poverty neighborhoods in New York City.

We are tremendously under-resourced and are often faced with social-emotional issues. However, we create safe spaces for our students and help them to develop critical thinking skills to find solution based answers. Our media class is part of this necessary step to help rebuild the community.

We recently got a donation for some equipment pieces that is helping RSA students to share their thoughts, widely communicate amongst their peers, and create content for parent engagement. But the demand (and interest) is growing. Now we have students who are interested in producing and writing and we need to find a way to manifest these interest. An additional camera with lenses are a big piece of this. It will also be used to create "crews" and develop media skills that can create opportunity for themselves. To see themselves as contributors to their community, critically think, and pursue personal passion projects.
