Measuring Up to Science Matters

Help me give my students tools to be able to continue our S.T.E.M. studies learning about the physical and chemical properties of Matter. We'll measure the mass of substances before and after changes!

My Students

Words to describe my fifth-grade students are as follows: learning to be inquisitive, curious, and eager to try hands-on learning. They are loving various strategies to stretch their thinking.

These scales, hot plate, and science boxes will help me teach the necessary Utah Science core with an opportunity for students to participate in the learning.

Instead of watching me do a demonstration, they will each be in small groups measuring, taking data, and charting their findings to learn about Matter.

My Project

The supplies requested in this project, such as scales, will allow our class to work in small groups so students will have more opportunities to participate in hands-on science activities. I will use the heat plate to demonstrate the physical and chemical changes that take place with temperature changes. The science boxes will be used to prepare individual supplies for each team of students. This will allow us to be more efficient to distribute and return experiment supplies in an orderly fashion.

Our fifth-graders will increase their engagement as they learn to measure the mass of substances before and after physical and chemical changes.

Hands-on learning will help my students make connections with the core content and allow them to learn through experiences to bring science and their study of Matter to life!
