Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a low socioeconomic campus. Most of my students are bilingual English Language Learners and many of them are struggling learners eager to grow and succeed. My students face many struggles such as homelessness and poverty. Many of them lack parental support & in spite of that they are energetic learners with a smile on their face and a positive attitude who love to learn math! I also service many students with special needs such as learning disabilities, physical impairments, and emotionally challenged students as well. I try to make learning come to life for them to help them understand that math can be fun and they can succeed in school.
My Project
I teach three 3rd grade Math classes who love to learn through hands-on activities. Many of my students are English Language Learners who not only lack Math vocabulary, they also lack a solid background that will help them make real life connections to the ideas I'm trying to teach. They get so excited when our lessons can come to life by using materials such as these weight and measurement sets from Lakeshore in my project. I love creating lessons that my students can participate in and experience. My students are in need of measurement supplies like the metric and customary weight sets and the capacity kit. Highlighters are also a much needed item in my Math class as my over 70 kids use them daily.
