This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My super scientists this year are diverse and come from the tiniest town with the biggest heart. My 7th graders haven’t had a normal school year since they were in 4th grade and are loving being back in the building full time. The hands-on learning is the best part of science, but a poor district with a majority of families living below the poverty line makes having science come alive difficult and with a lot of out-of-pocket expenses for me.
My students can be anything they want to be, they are capable and resilient and deserve to have the same opportunities that other students in more affluent districts.
I want to continue to give them opportunities to learn and grow so they are prepared to do all the great and wonderful things they will do for the world.
My Project
Students will be using these scales to measure mass throughout a variety of experiments. One of the best labs of the year is our Osmosis Egg lab where students measure the mass of eggs and have them sit in different substances to see how liquid moves in and out of the egg (cell membrane) this takes a high-level concept and makes it visual and interactive for my students. We also want to increase their science skills and being able to properly measure mass and round to the significant figures is an important step in the scientific process.
