Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
One of the main topics in second grade is measurement. This is a great opportunity to be hands on with the rulers and meter sticks. Unfortunately, we have had to share the two yards sticks I have and that sometimes becomes a problem. At this age a lot of the students are hands on and when they can physically have the material in their hands it helps them understand the concept better. With the cardstock I enjoy seeing the students create their projects and connecting it to our measuring units.
Even in math students can be creative artists.
Measuring is always a fun unit as previous students have created yarn monsters, a measuring garden, or their own pirates. To be able to do this requires the right materials. Having an extra pencil sharpener will also help out, as some students are still figuring out how not to put too much pressure on their pencils. Second grade is a year of discovery, mistakes, and independence.
As students get to learn about independence, I also like to share stories with them about people they may or may not know. Especially people who are just like them. Having representation matters and the books that I choose for them do that. Students need all the opportunities they can get.
