My students need concrete materials such as tambourines, comparing sizes concept kit, number line math chart, venn diagram trays, sorting trays and patterning trays.
"You have to reach them to teach them. Every student. Everyday."
I teach at a separate public day school for students with severe, profound and multiple disabilities.
The students at my school come from all around our county in order to receive the services my school has to offer. Students not only participate in the typical academic areas (reading, writing, science and math) and specials (art, music and PE), but also get therapy services as needed, weekly aquatics and weekly trips into the community to enhance classroom learning.
The students at my school are nonverbal and use voice output devices and other assistive technology to work on communicating choices. Throughout the day, students are helped into various pieces of adaptive equipment allowing them to sit, stand, take a couple of steps, or lie down as needed. Students complete all activities with direct hand over hand assistance from the staff working with them in the classroom.
My Project
The math activities selected for this project will enhance student experiences in mathematics. My students often respond positively to music. The tambourines I requested are not only safe for students to hold independently, but can be used to reinforce counting in a variety of activities, such as graphing, concepts of more and less, number lines, etc. The instruments can also be used to create musical patterns. The sorting, patterning and venn-diagram trays I selected will will serve as a tactile graphic organizer for students, which will be helpful also for students who are blind or visually impaired. All of the materials I selected can be used by my students with assistance and can also be easily adapted to better meet each of their unique needs.
The math materials requested for this project are important because my students are held accountable for meeting curriculum standards, just as all students should be.
I often make materials for my students to meet their unique needs because the school system is not always able to provide what my students need. The items I have selected for this project will be used throughout the year to reinforce math concepts and provide students with new, exciting materials to motivate and engage them!
