My students need class sets of the books The Missing Gator of Gumbo Limbo and Everglades in order to help enrich their learning about the environment and strengthen their reading and comprehension skills.

My Students

Imagine being 13 years old and trying to read your Science textbook, but it seems like a foreign language. You want to understand but the words and vocabulary don't make sense! My students need Science brought to life in a way that is interesting so they can relate and understand!

My students come from a high poverty community.

I struggle trying to get these young teens excited about learning Science! It's very hard for them to relate to some of the material. Many students, especially the boys, are focused on friends and playing. The girls are social butterflies, wanting nothing more than to sit and chat. All of my students are very social and need a way to connect their desire for relevant details to being engaged in learning our Science curriculum.

My Project

The books I have requested will immediately capture the minds and attention of my students. The Missing Gator of Gumbo Limbo by Jean Craighead George is an ecological mystery centered around a middle school girl searching for an alligator that is vital to the ecosystem in the Everglades. She must hurry because authorities are also searching for the gator to eliminate him! Liza Poole must find Dajun the alligator to protect the land. In the book Everglades, a canoe guide tells 5 children the story of how the Everglades came about. The enriching, descriptive language will captivate the minds and hearts of my readers when they discover the incredible ecosystem is now endangered!

Many of my students struggle to read on grade level.

There is a lack of reading material and motivation to read at home, and anytime I have read books to my students they have sat captivated at the story. They love to hear stories and relate what they have gone through and experienced to stories that I tell them. Having these books in my classroom will light a fire for my students to not only learn about the environment but to take action and make wise decisions in order to preserve our Earth.
