We are a community-based school. Over 80% of the student population at our school are on the Free and Reduced Price lunch which aligns with the federal poverty income levels. While some of our students face difficulties of not having a home, others have been through a tremendous amount of trauma or face a declared economic state of poverty. Most of the students in our building in are constantly thinking about food or shelter. Until you meet a person in this state of need, you will not understand it. I truly hope, you don't meet people in this state. Having a sport or hobby to pursue gives them something to relieve their minds and bodies of for awhile and give them instant happiness with!
Having a time of for creative of play and with high quality materials is crucial for students for who are already facing large odds.
These materials will allow the students to explore create ways to solve math problems, build buildings, create scientific methods, etc.
We have on average 32 students who are homeless each night at our school. We have over 82 percent of our student population that receive free and breakfast; thus food inequities are a great concerns to most of our student body here in this school. I have asked for food before and it was granted and the families were so grateful!
The food that is given is very impactful to these marginalized students, who are astonished that someone, usually that they don't know would give to them with nothing to ask in return.
It is a priceless gift of compassion that literally lights a little fire in our homeless children to keep going and they know they not just a teacher or more care, but the outside world cares too.
