My school currently serves approximately 2500 students in grades 9-12. My students come from homes with range from farms to public housing and everything in between. Most are from economically disadvantaged homes, as 100% of our students receive a free breakfast, lunch, and after school dinner.
Our motto here is that we are a "family." The students and staff alike have bought into this message of respect and compassion.
We provide them with a safe learning environment and try to meet each and every student's academic and personal needs. We feel if they are safe and comfortable, there are no limits to what they can achieve.
Our students have overcome many hardships by the time they come to us in the eighth grade. As a teacher, you set out to make a difference thinking you have something to offer your students, when in reality, it is often the students that do the most teaching.
My Project
Mental Health is one of the most difficult challenges we face as a community. It is an issue that affects every single student and staff member. Because so many of our children come from low socio-economic home environments, they come to school ill prepared with positive coping skills. They struggle with handling stress and anxiety. We have seen a dramatic rise in student suicides in the last 5 years.
The biggest hurdle our students face in the classroom is everything they bring with them to school.
Their home environment and everything that goes along with that is the biggest determining factor of a student's success- both in school and in life. If we can equip our students with coping skills, goals for their future, and a positive mental attitude, we can combat so many issues they come to us with. By providing so many extra supports, it allows us as teachers to have more time to spend on actually teaching.
As a school, I believe that mental health should be a permanent fixture in our curriculum. By incorporating a Mental Health curriculum that utilizes technology to cover such
items as goal setting, vision boards, stress reduction, dealing with anxiety, mindfulness exercises, etc. we hope to improve the overall health of not only our students, but our staff also! Online resources, activities, and exercises are numerous and easily accessed, provided we have the technology for our students to do so.
